Bring the native forest back to the city! Assist a committed community group in restoring the native forest in the Mangaonua Gully, Silverdale. Volunteers are needed to help keep on top of weed growth and some plantings during the winter months. We also learn how to identify weeds and native plants and enjoy seeing the growth of native plants and trees. We use secateurs to remove invasive vines, such as honeysuckle and convolvulus, which are overwhelming the native species.
Our group (Friends of Mangaonua) supports Hamilton City Council's Nature in the City Strategy, which aims to increase the native vegetation cover in Hamilton from 2 to 10% by 2050.
We advise volunteers to wear sunscreen, a hat, long sleeves, long trousers, and sturdy footwear. The main equipment we use are gloves and secateurs; if you do not have these, we can provide them.
