Maths Tutor for Adult Learner (Online/In-Person) - Gordonton

Hamilton

T is a motivated adult learner working towards tertiary study and is taking an important next step in their education. They are preparing to begin their Fundamentals in Mathematics MAT303 online course in late January 2026, which is a key prerequisite for further study. Having the right support in place at this stage will play an important role in helping T move forward.

T is dyslexic and also lives with health challenges that can affect their mobility, learning style, and overall wellbeing. Like many learners, they do best with encouragement, flexibility, and the opportunity to talk through concepts at their own pace. Having a tutor who can review course material with them and, where possible, sit in on online class contact time will strongly support their progress.

This tutoring role can be online, in person, or a combination of both, depending on what works best for you and T. What matters most is your willingness to be patient, adaptable, and supportive as T works through the course.

You will need access to your own computer and Wi Fi, along with flexibility around how and when you connect with T. The course begins in late January 2026.

If you enjoy supporting someone to build confidence and work towards their education goals, this role offers the chance to support a learner at a pivotal point in their study journey.

Requirements:
  • Good understanding of mathematics, including calculus, algebra, and critical pathway analysis (NZQA Level 3 or equivalent), and the ability to explain concepts in a way that makes sense to T
  • Clear communicator who can share ideas verbally, in writing, and online
  • Access to your own computer and reliable internet

Personal qualities

  • Friendly, approachable, and able to bring a sense of humour to learning
  • Supportive but able to gently keep sessions focused and on track
  • Patient, understanding that learning may take longer because of T’s dyslexia and mobility challenges
  • Flexible and adaptable, willing to adjust plans when T’s health needs change
  • Inclusive and accepting, open to the fact that everyone learns differently
  • Calm, broad minded, and non-judgemental, especially as T has Tourette Syndrome, which can sometimes include involuntary swearing. Being patient and non-judgemental helps create a comfortable learning environment.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Around 2 to 4 hours per week, usually split across more than one session to suit T’s pace and needs.
