Help a Young Person Learn to Drive – Volunteer as a Driving Mentor
Got a full licence and a bit of spare time? You could help a young person in Thames get their driver’s licence—and open up a world of opportunities for them.
As a volunteer mentor, you’ll be paired with one learner for a 12-week programme. You’ll meet twice a week for a one-hour driving practice, using our Valley Toyota car (so no need to use your own!).
You don’t need to be a driving instructor—just a calm, reliable person who’s keen to encourage and support someone learning new skills. We provide training and ongoing support, and have reserve mentors on standby if life gets in the way.
Why does it matter?
Many young people in our community can’t access jobs, education, or independence simply because they don’t have a licence. You can help change that.
What Our Mentors Have to Say
Colleen:
“I was looking for something else to make life meaningful, to give back to the community and meet new people. It’s very rewarding. It’s only a couple of hours a week, so not a big commitment. Having a driver’s license removes barriers to work and gives independence.”
Jan:
“It’s good seeing change and skills being implemented. Knowing you are helping to set up independence and jobs. It is so wonderful to be involved.”
Pete:
“I became a mentor to give something back to the wonderful Thames community that has been so welcoming to my wife and me since we moved here.”
If you're local to Thames and keen to give back in a hands-on way, we’d love to hear from you.
