Horse Leader – Riding for the Disabled, Te Aroha
At Riding for the Disabled, our purpose is simple. We use the power of horses to make a difference in people’s lives. For children and adults living with a disability or facing challenges, riding can build confidence, grow self-esteem, enhance communication skills, and help build meaningful relationships. Every moment of progress, big or small, is worth celebrating.

We are looking for caring people to join our team as Horse Leaders. In this role, you’ll be guiding the horses during riding sessions, making sure each rider has a safe, enjoyable, and empowering experience. You won’t be doing this alone — every rider is also supported by a coach and another volunteer, so you’re always part of a friendly, supportive team.

Here’s how you’ll make a difference

  • Lead the horse safely during sessions
  • Help create a calm, encouraging environment for the rider
  • Work alongside the coach and another volunteer to support each session
  • Share in the joy and pride of the riders’ achievements

We’re a well-organised, welcoming group, and we’d love to have some new people join our team. By becoming a Horse Leader, you’ll not only help our riders grow — you’ll find the experience is deeply rewarding for you too.

Requirements:
  • Volunteers available on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings (during school terms)
  • Comfortable working with horses and being around people with disabilities or special needs
  • Someone who enjoys the outdoors and has a reasonable level of fitness
  • Ideally, you have some experience with horses, but more importantly you are friendly, caring, encouraging, and a great team player

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Able to commit once or twice a week for at least 4–6 months
  • Available on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings (during school terms)
  • Every volunteer makes a real difference — without your support, these sessions would have to be cancelled, and our riders would miss out on the joy, confidence, and progress they gain from each ride
