Volunteer Driver for Your Cambridge Community

Cambridge

Stand with Cambridge - Become a Volunteer Driver in Cambridge
Imagine this - You’ve got an appointment, a check-up, a specialist, a follow-up after surgery. But you don’t drive anymore. Your family’s busy, or far away. The bus doesn’t come close enough, or it’s just too hard to manage today.

Now imagine someone turning up at your front gate - with a smile, a steady arm, and time to take you where you need to go.

That’s what our Volunteer Driver Service does, right here in Cambridge.
We show up for those who need a little support — and a lift — to their medical and community appointments, both in Cambridge and in Hamilton. We’re looking for more locals to help us keep that promise.

You’ll use your own car, and we’ll reimburse mileage:

  • Cambridge roundtrip: $15
  • Hamilton roundtrip: $30

What matters more than the ride is your presence. Your patience.
Your willingness to say, “I’ve got you.”

If you’re calm, kind, and willing to be there for someone — we’d love to have you on our team.
Because here in Cambridge, we look out for each other.

Requirements:

You Can Say No — We Promise!
We get it — signing up to volunteer can feel like a lifelong commitment.
But at Cambridge Community House, we know life’s busy, plans change, and sometimes you just need a week (or three) off. That’s totally fine, we’re all human here.

If you’ve got a bit of time, a kind heart, and a reliable car, you can help someone in Cambridge get to the appointments that keep them well and connected. Here’s what helps us keep things running smoothly:

  • You have a full, clean NZ driver’s licence, so our passengers feel safe in your hands.

  • Your vehicle is registered and has a current Warrant of Fitness, because safe wheels matter.

  • You have a clean police record, as we’re often supporting vulnerable members of the community.

  • You’re friendly, caring, and easy to chat with, because a warm presence goes a long way.

  • You’re respectful and open to all cultures, reflecting the diversity of our community.

  • You’re a clear communicator, whether it’s a helpful heads-up or a good old-fashioned yarn.

  • You’re physically able to assist passengers, especially those who may need a hand getting in and out.

  • Whether you can help once a week or once a month — it all counts.

  • Say yes when you can. Say no when you need to.

  • We’ll still be glad to have you on the team.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • We offer the Volunteer Driver service Monday to Friday, but you don’t need to be available every day.
  • If you can help only on specific days or at certain times, just let us know, we’re flexible.
  • Whether it’s once a week or once in a while, every bit of help makes a difference.
  • Say yes when you can. Say no when you need to. We don’t do guilt-trips - just car trips!
