Youth Camp/Weekend Support Worker

All Towns
Organisation:
Recreate NZ
Category:
Social Support
Hours:
Evenings/Weekends

Your role will vary from programme to programme but your role will be to support young people with intellectual disabilities to participate in outdoor or indoor adventure and social overnight programmes. These programmes offer a range of activities e.g. Luge riding, bowling, rock climbing, movies, watching local sports games and tourist attractions such as; Hobbiton, 3D trick art gallery and boat cruises for our young people. All activities are based on what is on offer in the town/city we stay in and the needs of the group. We often stay in baches in places such as Rotorua, Taupo, Whangamata, Raglan, Coromandel, Tauranga and Waihi Beach! They would not be able to attend these without generous volunteers like you! You would be an extra set of eyes and hands, and most importantly, a role model to our youth, overnight programmes also include things like helping in the kitchen with dishes or cooking, helping kids make beds or pack their bags, encourage them to participate and support them to reach their full potential! You get to fully participate in all activities with our young people whilst at the same time gaining invaluable learning experiences on ways to engage with a diverse group of people. As a volunteer, Recreate NZ pays for all the activities, food and accommodation that the group does together on Programme.

By participating in this volunteering opportunity you are helping achieve the following United Nations Sustainability Goals ;

Goal 3 - Good health and well being
Goal 4 - Quality education
Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities

Requirements:

Experience with people with intellectual disabilities is required for our overnight programmes.
A positive, outgoing attitude is a necessity when on programme with our young people. We will be adventuring around the country and encouraging our participants to push themselves socially and physically, so you will have to be comfortable supporting people in a range of environments with a range of abilities.
PLEASE NOTE: All programmes leave from Hamilton CBD and transport is provided.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

We have a range of 3 to 5 day overnight programmes and these are across a range of adventure skill; our short break is for a more relaxed weekend away chilling out, getaways are more activity based and our camps are heavily activity based if you're keen for some adventure! You can choose the programmes that suit you and your schedule. We run approximately 2-3 overnight programmes a Term and would love if you can commit to 1 or more of these. You are also welcome to attend day programmes too - these are based in Hamilton!
