Help Someone Find Their Voice | Volunteer with Shama
Shama aims to support the development of a truly multi-cultural New Zealand where all women from ethnic minorities would be fully integrated into New Zealand society, to live lives of dignity, free from fear of violence and discrimination. As part of our work supporting ethnic women, we run weekly English language classes for women and we’re looking for two female volunteers to help make them shine.

Classes are held at our Center in Hamilton Central, Liverpool Street:

  • Thursdays, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon (Basic classes) or,
  • Tuesdays, 12:30 – 2:00 pm (Basic Conversation classes)

You'll support women learning everyday English, chatting in small groups or sometimes one-on-one. Most participants are just starting out, and your patience and encouragement will go a long way.

Requirements:
  • Female volunteers only
  • Fluent, clear communicator in English
  • Supportive, patient, and culturally aware
  • Local knowledge of New Zealand life
  • Previous teaching experience, preferably ESOL, is welcome but not required.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • Minimum commitment of 3 months
  • Consistent weekly attendance is required.
