Volunteer Gardener - New Zealand Timber Museum, Putāruru

This role is really important, it keeps the site looking beautiful, looks after all our plants (from native flora to ornamental and forestry-themed gardens), and helps make sure visitors have a lovely experience. You’ll be helping the outdoor spaces complement the museum’s exhibits while keeping everything safe and welcoming.

Requirements:
  • Physical Ability: You should be reasonably fit and able to enjoy hands-on tasks like bending, kneeling, light lifting, and working outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Safety Gear (PPE):

  • What to Bring: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • What We Provide: High-visibility vests, gloves, and safety glasses.
  • Transportation: You’ll need your own transport to and from the New Zealand Timber Museum in Putāruru.
  • Willingness to Learn: A genuine interest in gardening and horticulture, and a willingness to learn new techniques to care for our unique grounds.
  • Commitment to Safety: Follow all museum health and safety guidelines, including using tools and equipment safely.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Be friendly, reliable, and happy to work as part of a small team or on your own when needed.
Time commitment:
  • Days: Monday to Thursday
  • Hours: Between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm
  • Commitment: Preferably one shift per week or fortnight
