Vintage Armchair Restoration Volunteer

Volunteer Opportunity: Chair Restoration
Wondernauts, a not-for-profit community childcare located in the beautiful grounds of Ruakura, has recently acquired a child-sized vintage wooden armchair (circa 1950–70s) that we would like to refresh for use by our children.

While the chair is in generally good condition, the cover is quite old and the seat area is saggy. We haven’t taken it apart ourselves, so we’re not sure whether it just needs the seat cushion replaced or if the springs, webbing, or other components also need attention.

The back upright includes a wooden panel on the back side. The wooden arms are in reasonable condition, so it would be up to you to decide whether to resurface them or leave them as they are.

What We’d Like:

  • Assess and repair or replace the seat cushion, springs, or webbing as needed
  • Refresh or resurface the wooden arms if required
  • Restore the chair to make it safe, comfortable, and visually appealing for children

This is a great opportunity for someone with skills in furniture restoration or upholstery to make a tangible contribution to our childcare environment.

Requirements:
  • Someone with experience in upholstery
  • Has some spare time to give the chair the refresh it deserves
  • Can choose to work on the chair at Wondernauts or take it home
  • Materials will be provided, though you are welcome to use your own tools if preferred
Time commitment:
  • Flexible timing – the time required is uncertain
  • Opportunity to view the chair before committing to the project
