Our gardens at Abbeyfield Waikato in Hillcrest aren’t just green spaces—they’re places where residents can relax, connect, and feel at home. As a volunteer gardener, you’ll help make these areas safe, inviting, and full of life.

What you'll be doing

  • Weed, trim, and tidy garden beds
  • Plant seasonal flowers and shrubs
  • Keep pathways and shared spaces safe and accessible
  • Share friendly chats with residents while you work

This is more than gardening—it’s about brightening someone’s day, giving them a space to enjoy and bringing a little happiness into their lives. Volunteers with some gardening experience are especially valued, and there’s room for creativity and independence in the role.

Requirements:
  • Some gardening experience preferred
  • Comfortable working independently at times
  • Friendly and happy to have a chat with residents
  • Able to pass a police check
  • Bring your own gardening tools if you can (optional)
  • Able to give a couple of hours a week
  • Follow safety guidance and respect residents’ spaces

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Flexible—fit gardening around your week
  • Ideally a couple of hours each week
  • Your regular help keeps our gardens beautiful and our residents smiling
