Horse Handler & Leader - Cambridge

Love Horses? Join Our Volunteer Team in Cambridge
At Cambridge Riding for the Disabled, we see the incredible difference horses can make, helping children and adults with physical and intellectual challenges grow in confidence, movement, and joy.

We’re looking for volunteers with horse experience to become part of our small, supportive team. If you enjoy being around horses and want to do something meaningful with your time, we’d love to meet you.

How you’ll spend your time with us:

  • Bringing horses in and getting them ready – You'll start the day bringing horses in from the paddock, grooming them, and helping tack them up. It's a great way to build a connection with the horses and set the tone for a calm, positive session.
  • Leading horses during rides – During sessions, you'll walk beside the horse, helping guide them safely while the rider focuses on balance and connection. It's steady, focused work – and incredibly rewarding.
  • Supporting the horses' wellbeing – You’ll help keep routines calm and consistent, making sure our horses feel safe, relaxed, and ready to do their special job.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Knows their way around horses and handles them with confidence and care
  • Has a calm, patient nature and a steady presence – both horses and riders respond best to this
  • Is happy working in a team, following our routines and supporting others
  • Feels comfortable around people with disabilities – or is open to learning

You’ll be fully supported and trained – and you’ll be part of something truly special in our Cambridge community.

Requirements:
  • You’ll need to be 14 or older to volunteer in this role.
  • Some solid horse experience is important – we work with horses of all sizes and personalities, so confidence and care are key.
  • We’ll show you the RDA way – how we handle our horses with consistency, kindness, and as a team. You’ll need to be open to learning and working together.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Tuesdays mornings are ideal, as that’s when we need the most support
  • But we also have other sessions during the week where horse handlers are welcome

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
