Phone Literacy Liaison - Home-Based (Short/Long term)

Home Based

Join Us as a Support/Liaison Volunteer with Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)!
Want to help with literacy but don’t have a lot of time?
This role is just right if you can spare a couple of weeks each school term, at times that work for you. You can jump in for just one term or keep going if you’d like — no long-term weekly commitment needed!

What you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll be given a small list (5-6 people) to connect with and teamed up with a buddy volunteer.
  • One buddy makes calls during the day (8am–3pm), the other in the early evening (3pm–7pm).
  • You and your buddy will keep each other in the loop on who you’ve reached and who needs a bit more time.
  • We provide a phone app that keeps your number private and doesn’t cost you a cent.
  • Before you start, we’ll run a friendly Zoom training session — and if you miss it, don’t worry, it’s recorded for you to watch anytime.

What we’re hoping for:

  • Someone friendly and patient who enjoys helping others.
  • Comfortable enough with tech to use a messaging app (Slack), phone app, and a simple spreadsheet — and we’ll be here to help if you need a hand.
  • Able to make a handful of phone calls each day for two weeks.
  • It would be wonderful if you can do this every term, but even helping out once makes a big difference!

A little about our students:

  • They’re between 14 and 65 years old and come from all walks of life.
  • Some are just learning letters; others want to improve essay writing.
  • Most are building skills to handle everyday challenges with confidence.
Requirements:
  • Someone who is comfortable using a computer
  • Clear and friendly spoken English
  • Someone we can count on to follow through
  • A caring and approachable nature
  • Enjoys having a good chat on the phone

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Volunteer for two weeks, once every school term
  • Calls done either during the day (8 or 9am to 3pm)
  • Or in the early evening (3–5pm or 5–7pm)
