Recycling Champion

Hamilton

As our new Recycling Champion volunteer, you will be the face of local waste minimisation efforts — a key link between the community, council, and environmental initiatives. If you’re enthusiastic about sustainability, love working with people, and are proactive in getting things done, this is the role for you!

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Education & Awareness – attend fortnightly council recycling and waste minimisation meetings to stay informed, represent the Centre, and provide feedback.
  • Centre Waste Management - Keep our surrounding parks and the community centre grounds clean, tidy, and waste-free. Manage outdoor bins and recycling stations to ensure they are used effectively and maintained regularly.
  • Event Waste Coordinator - Lead waste and recycling operations for community events — including setup of bins, signage, volunteer coordination, and post-event clean-up.
  • Champion Waste Minimisation – explore potential initiatives that will help local residents and the community to reduce illegal dumping and use their recycling bins correctly.

Why Volunteer?

  • Be a change-maker in your community.
  • Build leadership, coordination, and environmental education skills.
  • Connect with like-minded locals and council leaders.
  • Help build a more sustainable future for Fairfield & Chartwell communities.

There is potential for this role to become a paid, contracted position in the future.

Requirements:
  • Passionate about sustainability, recycling, and community wellbeing
  • Confident working independently and with others
  • Organised and great at taking initiative
  • Comfortable with speaking with community and local council reps

Prior experience in environmental or volunteer work is a bonus but not essential — your passion and commitment are what matter most.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Attend HCC Recycling hui, 2nd and 4th Monday of the month.
  • General waste duties, 2-4 hours a week.

As this is a new role, time commitments may increase as we know more about what is required from this role.
