Live in Cambridge? Join the Tree-Loving Legends

Cambridge

We’re basically a bunch of oldies who think gardening counts as cardio
We’re the Cambridge Tree Trust - 32 strong, average age somewhere around 76, and if you’re 65, you’re considered a teenager!

We spend our days planting and caring for native and exotic trees all over Cambridge. We're currently working on 30 different planting projects which keeps us going. But if you prefer to stay close to home? Our nursery needs help potting up plants and giving them a good start, it’s like babysitting, but without the screaming (usually).

  • Now, if you don’t know a weed from a sapling, no worries, we’re happy to have you anyway. You can always help with morning tea, as long as you can tell the difference between coffee and tea (some of us are still working on that).
  • Fair warning though: we do need a few folks who know their plants, because last time someone yanked out a perfectly good tree thinking it was a weed, it was like watching someone water the lawn with petrol. So if you’re handy with a trowel and a sharp eye, you are exactly who we need in our band wagon!
  • We joke it sometimes feels like we’re scouting the perfect tree to put our ashes under. Morbid? Maybe. But it keeps us laughing. And if you're one for humour like ours, you will fit right in.

If you live in Cambridge or you’re new and want to meet some local legends who’ll tease you mercilessly but mean well — come have a go.
No experience needed, just bring your sense of humour, a willingness to get your hands dirty, and maybe a good story or two.

Requirements:

What you’ll need (or at least fake convincingly)

  • Be reasonably fit or at least know how to pace yourself like the seasoned pro you think you are.
  • Enjoy working with a bunch of characters who may laugh at your jokes (or just laugh at you).
  • Bring a good sense of dark humour.
  • Love fresh air, sunshine, and getting your hands gloriously dirty (it’s nature’s spa treatment).
  • Have a positive, can-do attitude — grumbling is allowed, but only during tea breaks (and preferably with a biscuit in hand).
Time commitment:

About the Groups:

  • We’ve got two groups — Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pick whichever suits your fancy (or both if you’re desperate for fresh air).
  • We start promptly at 9:00 am, come rain, shine, or a mild apocalypse.
  • If the rain’s really having a laugh, we don’t dig—we just sit around for an extended morning tea and banter session. Priorities, right?
  • Usually, by 11:00 am, we call it quits and head back to base.
  • We always have time for a well-earned coffee and a proper chinwag afterwards. Mostly about who accidentally pulled out the wrong plant.
