Tutors / Assistants (Auckland & Waikato)

Meremere

Make a real difference by helping us to share simple principles of practical philosophy and life tools that can help prisoners change their lives for the better.

  • Our programme currently runs in Auckland Prison and Wiri Men's Prison, with plans to expand to Mt Eden and Springhill Prison in Hampton Downs.
  • As a Tutor or Assistant, you’ll help deliver courses that share practical philosophy and life tools, empowering prisoners to transform their lives.
  • The prison environment can be challenging—ever-changing, sometimes frustrating, and even daunting at first.
  • However, many volunteers find this to be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling roles they’ve ever taken on.
Requirements:
  • Become a member of The Freedom Philosophy Society for just $20 per year.
  • No prior experience in practical philosophy or tutoring is required—especially for Assistants—as full training is provided.
  • We seek mature, calm, and open-minded individuals who are ready to support and connect with others.
  • Flexibility is essential in the prison environment.
  • Our model typically consists of 1 Tutor and 2 Assistants per group of 8-12 students, with multiple groups running simultaneously.
  • Tutors begin as Assistants to gain experience before stepping into a leading role.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Minimum commitment: 3-4 hours per week on a weekday for 6 weeks, plus a few hours of training beforehand.
  • Timing is flexible to align with course schedules.
  • We run six courses per year.
  • Consistency benefits both students and tutors, so we prefer volunteers who can support multiple courses throughout the year.
