The Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT) is seeking a dedicated volunteer literacy coach to provide valuable support to an adult student in need. As a Literacy Coach, you can give back and make a real difference in someone's life. It's a fulfilling and enjoyable role that allows you to share your love for learning while empowering others to reach their full potential.

What we're looking for:

  • We welcome individuals with or without teaching experience, as we provide comprehensive training and ongoing support.

  • We provide the training required to be able to coach students and create a personalized learning plan. You work together to develop goals and select materials and activities to help learners reach their goals.

  • Your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment are what matter most.

  • 1-2 hours per week meeting at the local Whitianga library.

Requirements:
  • Excellent communication skills with fluency in English (verbal and written)

  • Reliable.

  • An analytical mind, friendly personality.

  • We train you and give you all the support you need.

  • A background in education would be helpful.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • 1-2 hours weekly.
  • Long term commitment preferred as it takes time to build trust with the learner.
