Hospital Services Volunteer - Friends of the Emergency Department - Thames

Emergency departments are busy places where information, guidance and support are just as important as treatment. As a FED, you'll provide comfort, reassurance and help to patients and their families, becoming an important part of a hospital's emergency department. Hato Hone St John are looking for people who have an aptitude for working with a diversity of cultures that will bring passion to this crucial function. We offer full training and support required for you to enjoy and be fully prepared for this role. This includes shadowing an existing volunteer for a few weeks, so you understand what's required.

Requirements:

No prior experience is required. However, there are certain things that are needed to be considered to be successful in these roles:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sensitivity towards those who are sick
  • A friendly, caring and compassionate nature
  • A genuine interest in the well-being of others
  • Physically fit (these roles involve a lot of walking)
  • NZ citizenship or valid work visa
  • Full police check
  • Medical clearance, vaccines and immunisation (depending on the hospital)
  • Mask fit testing
  • You must be at least 18 years of age

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

We ask volunteers to commit to a four-hour shift once a week or fortnightly. The shifts vary between hospitals and care facilities. In addition, due to the nature of these roles, we are only able to consider volunteers who are able to commit for a minimum of 12 months.
