Big Buddy Volunteer Mentor (Male Role Model)
Be the Role Model You Wish You Had
Big Buddy is a mentoring programme that changes lives for the boys who need a steady male role model, and for the men who step up to be that person. We match boys aged 7–13, who don’t have a father figure in their lives, with everyday good guys from the community. As a Big Buddy, your role is simple: Be the constant he needs. It’s that simple.
Why It Matters
Some boys grow up without a consistent male role model and that can affect how they see themselves and the world. A Big Buddy offers:
- A steady, positive presence in their life
- Someone who listens, encourages, and believes in them
- Real connection — built through time, trust, and showing up
What Little Buddies Get From It
- More confidence to believe in themselves
- A sense of self-worth and belonging
- Courage to try and experience new things
- The feeling of being seen, heard, and valued - that he matters.
- A positive outlook on life and what he can accomplish
What Big Buddies Get Out of It
- Building a genuine friendship with a kid who needs someone like you to help them
- Experiencing the pride and joy of helping a boy believe in himself
- The satisfaction of knowing you're helping shape a young life
- Sharing laughs, new experiences, and moments that stick with you forever
- Finding purpose through giving back in a way that directly impacts someone else's life because you showed up
You Don’t Need to Be a Superhero
We’re not looking for perfection — just good, reliable men who care and are willing to give a bit of their time. There’s a boy out there who could really use someone like you.
Requirements:
What we're looking for in a Big Buddy?
- Between your 20s and late 60s (but more importantly, with a big heart)
- Able to commit a few hours each week — especially on weekends
- Have a car and a full driver’s license to get around
- Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
What You Can Expect from the Screening Process
- Your safety and happiness — and that of your Little Buddy — is our top priority
- All men who apply go through a thorough but friendly screening process
- This helps make sure you’re the right fit for Big Buddy — and that we’re the right fit for you
- The process usually takes around 6 to 8 weeks from your first induction evening
Along the way, you’ll go through a few key steps:
- Character reference checks
- A police background check
- A relaxed home visit
- A one-on-one chat with one of our clinical assessors
Don’t worry — we’re here to support you every step of the way
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment:
Your Time Makes the Difference
- Just 2–3 hours a week — that’s all it takes to change a boy’s life
- We ask Big Buddies to commit for a minimum of 12 months
- Why? Because consistency builds trust, and trust builds confidence
- It’s a small slice of your week — but it can mean the world to your Little Buddy
