Friendly Companion Needed – Hamilton

This role is about supporting a person with intellectual disability to go out for short outings, and spending time together doing the activities she enjoys. The ideal person would be someone who has an interest in building a genuine friendship with someone and who shares similar interests. This lady likes to go out for coffee or short walks at the lake to enjoy some nature, doing knitting, some arts and crafts and some board/card games, and having a general chat with someone.
Here’s how you’ll spend time together:

  • Doing the things you already enjoy but including a new friend
  • Building a genuine friendship through shared interests and friendly chats
  • Meeting up regularly to enable you get to know each other and form a connection.
  • Helping your friend get out for small outings, in the community, and providing company at the same time.

Requirements:
  • You have your own transport and a full New Zealand driver’s license
  • Be comfortable with supporting someone who uses a walker to get around.
  • You don’t need any experience with intellectual disabilities—we’ll provide training and support to help you along the way. There’s also extra training available if you want to learn more.
  • You’re kind and caring, and treat people with respect and understanding
  • You’re a good listener, able to communicate clearly, and can adjust how you talk to suit your friend’s needs
  • You’re happy to spend regular time hanging out and building a friendship

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • You need to volunteer at least once every two weeks, with some flexibility
  • Commit to being a friend for at least 6 months
  • Each visit will usually last 1–3 hours, depending on the activities you choose together
