Friendly Companion Needed – Hamilton

Hamilton

Ever felt like doing something fun but had no one to go with?
Now imagine being the person who helps someone else feel that joy, someone who wants to go out but can’t do it alone.

If you love visiting cafes, browsing markets, catching movies or shows, or just going for a walk and having a good chat, why not bring along a friend who’d love to join you? Someone with an intellectual disability who’s looking for a mate to share those moments with.

Here’s how you’ll spend time together:

  • Doing the things you already enjoy but with a new friend by your side
  • Building a genuine friendship filled with fun and shared interests
  • Meeting up regularly to hang out, try new things, and just enjoy each other’s company
  • Helping your friend get to and from activities and events, just being there with a lift and some good company
  • We’ll match you with someone who shares your interests, whether it’s sports, nature, crafts, or just chatting over coffee.

Why it matters:

  • You’ll make a real difference in someone’s life by being a friend
  • It’s a chance to give back in a way that feels meaningful and fun
  • There are regular events throughout the year where you can meet others and grow your community
  • Think about the laughs, the stories, and the simple joy of spending time together, you’re creating something special for both of you.
Requirements:
  • You have your own transport and a full New Zealand driver’s license
  • You don’t need any experience with intellectual disabilities—we’ll provide training and support to help you along the way. There’s also extra training available if you want to learn more.
  • You’re kind and caring, and treat people with respect and understanding
  • You’re a good listener, able to communicate clearly, and can adjust how you talk to suit your friend’s needs
  • You’re happy to spend regular time hanging out and building a friendship

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • You need to volunteer at least once every two weeks, with some flexibility
  • Commit to being a friend for at least 6 months
  • Each visit will usually last 2–3 hours, depending on the activities you choose together
