Join Our Team as a Volunteer Train Guard!
Are you passionate about meeting new people and providing excellent service? Become a volunteer guard on our historic heritage railway and help deliver a memorable experience for passengers. Enjoy stunning views as the train weaves through farmland and follows the Ohinemuri River to Waikino Station Café. Training is provided, and you’ll be part of a fun, rewarding role in a unique setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure passenger safety and comfort during the journey
  • Share interesting stories about the history of the railway and surrounding areas
  • Maintain a clean and tidy environment on board the train
  • Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, ensuring a smooth process

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb steps and operate spring-loaded ramps (best suited for individuals with full mobility and good physical fitness)

Training:

  • Full training provided for all tasks and responsibilities

Requirements:
  • Full mobility and good physical fitness (involves climbing steps and operating spring-loaded ramps)
  • Warm, friendly, and people-oriented with a great sense of humour
  • Comfortable working in a team environment
  • Aged 18+ (preferred for safety and responsibility reasons)
  • Willing to wear a provided uniform during shifts

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Ideally available once a week or once a fortnight
  • Seasonal support also welcome — especially during school holidays and peak cruise ship season (October to April)
