Know Thames? Lend a Hand at the Hospital (Thursdays Only!)
You know what it’s like to feel useful, to have something to offer and most importantly to know it makes a difference. That’s exactly the kind of help we need right now!!

Thursdays are busy at Thames Hospital. People arrive unsure where to go, needing a bit of guidance or a hand with a wheelchair. When things get hectic, just having a calm, friendly person at the front doors can ease pressure and make a real difference, especially for our Emergency Department team.

If you’ve got a little time and a steady presence, we’d love to have you with us.

This is a great opportunity if you’re retired, looking for that social connection, or if you're starting out and wanting to build confidence and experience. You don’t need any special skills, all we need is a warm attitude and a willingness to help.
Here’s what you’d be doing:

  • Welcoming patients and visitors with a friendly hello
  • Helping people find the right department
  • Offering support to those needing a wheelchair or mobility help
  • Making sure wheelchairs are available and ready to go
  • Keeping the waiting area tidy and comfortable
  • Supporting reception staff with small tasks if needed

You won’t be based in the Emergency Department, but you’ll be helping ease the load by guiding people in the right direction before they get there.

And the truth is — we can’t run this role without locals stepping up. It only works if people from our own community put their hands up and offer to help. Right now, we really need you.

Requirements:
  • Someone friendly and patient who can spot when someone needs a hand
  • Comfortable enough to go up and offer help without being shy
  • Able to stay calm and think on their feet when things get busy or tricky
  • Just genuinely keen to help people from all walks of life
  • Respectful and understanding of everyone, no matter their background
  • Someone who’s reliable and shows up with a good attitude, ready to pitch in

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Thursdays, 10am to 2pm
  • We’d prefer a 6-month commitment — it really helps keep things running smoothly
  • We’ll provide a reference for you if you’re consistent and do well
  • The more volunteers we get, the more flexible it gets — you can do more shifts or fewer, whatever works for you
  • We’re happy to work with your schedule and make it as easy as possible
