Committee President - Hamilton Hearing Association

The Hamilton Hearing Association is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to supporting and advocating for all people with hearing loss and their families/whaanau in our community, including schools and rest homes. We are seeking a competent Committee President to help lead our committee.

What You'll Do:

  • Governance: Plan and coordinate board meetings (working with the Secretary), set agendas, chair meetings carefully following due process, and ensure minutes capture decisions accurately.
  • Strategic Oversight: Keep the board focused on strategic priorities and lead long-term planning.
  • Representation & Liaison: Act as the public face of the organisation—representing it at functions, liaising with the operational lead, and supporting staff or volunteers.
  • Ensure Governance Compliance: Work to uphold the organisation’s rules or constitution and ensure alignment with the Charities Act 2005 and legal obligations.
  • Support Committee Development: Oversee the induction and ongoing development of committee members and support strong governance culture.

Further, under the Charities Act 2005, all officers (including the President) have obligations to:

  • Advance the charitable purpose and use funds/assets accordingly.
  • Understand and adhere to the organisation’s rules and the law.
  • Carry out duties with honesty, care, and in good faith.
  • Retain ultimate accountability when delegating tasks.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has prior governance experience - board or committee leadership
  • Has strong leadership skills
  • Understands the NZ Charities requirements, constitutions, board best practice or has a willingness to learn
  • Is passionate about community and supporting hearing health in the Hamilton community.

Requirements:
  • Governance Experience —preferably in non-profit, volunteer, or charitable settings
  • Strong Leadership - Able to energize and guide diverse volunteer committee members toward shared goals
  • Strategic Thinker - Skilled in setting direction, developing plans, and maintaining focus on long-term impact
  • Excellent Communicator - Clear, diplomatic, and engaging in both committee and community settings
  • Integrity & Sound Judgment - Committed to ethical governance, transparency, and accountability
  • Knowledge of Governance Practice - Understanding of NZ Charities requirements, constitutions, board best practice, or willingness to learn
  • Community Commitment - Passionate about hearing health and committed to the Hamilton community

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:
  • Attend Monthly meeting, 3rd Monday of each month at 12:30pm.
  • Attend Annual General Meeting, once per calendar year - usually in April.
  • Attend/support non-compulsory fundraising events (optional).
  • Representation at Community Events.
