Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a unique mainland island in the central North Island of New Zealand. Our 3,400 hectare forested ancient volcano stretches from the rolling Waikato lowlands into the clouds above. The mountain is protected by a 47km pest-proof fence which keeps the forest free from mammalian predators, allowing it to regenerate and providing a flourishing pre-human habitat for New Zealand wildlife including many endangered species. Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is owned by the community and operated by the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust. Thanks to the work of the Trust, our sponsors and volunteers, the mountain is now home to many threatened species including kaka, hihi (stitchbird), takahe, giant weta, popokatea (whitehead), kiwi and tuatara, all of which are now thriving in the regenerated lush forest and pest free environment.
