It’s Youth Week – a time to celebrate the energy, passion, and commitment of young people across Aotearoa. Here in the Waikato, we daily get to witness the incredible impact our rangatahi have in their communities through volunteering. From sports clubs to social services, young people are stepping up, giving back, and shaping the future of our region.
Across the organisations we work with, we see youth volunteers making a real difference – whether it’s supporting Riding for the Disabled, helping out with Hato Hone St John, or getting involved with local events. Young people are taking their place in our communities.
One school where volunteering is integrated into every part of what they do is Waikato Diocesan School. Volunteering is not just encouraged there – it’s embraced. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with a few students who shared their experiences and motivations for getting involved.
Mia, for example, has been volunteering weekly for the past year with a local basketball group and a youth group. She enjoys volunteering with young children and values the connections she’s building in the community. Her advice for other young people?
“Just put your name down. Ask for opportunities, ask for help, and figure it out as you go. You won’t regret it.”
Mannat started volunteering in 2019 to help a family friend whose store was affected by COVID-19. She’s been lending a hand every week since.
“Helping a friend in hard times, seeing how grateful and happy they are – that’s reason enough,” she says. “Volunteering teaches you so many skills, gives you a glimpse into the workforce, and opens your eyes to other people’s lives.”
Her message to others?
“Definitely volunteer. You might only help one person, but that’s enough. Seeing others happy makes you happy too.”
These young volunteers are just a few examples of the many in our region who are proving that age is no barrier to making a difference. They are learning, growing, and inspiring others along the way.
To all our youth volunteers – thank you. You are helping to build a more connected, compassionate, and resilient Waikato. Your time, energy, and generosity don’t go unnoticed.
Happy Youth Week – and here’s to the next generation of changemakers!
