From the age of 14, Rosalie has been stepping into spaces of leadership, activism, and community. Now a full-time student at the University of Waikato, she continues to use her voice and skills to shape change through volunteering and governance.
Her first step into volunteering came almost by chance when she saw a Facebook event for Seed Waikato and decided to go along. That initial experience left a strong impression. “Everyone was welcoming and supportive, it felt like a community. From there, I got involved in governance with Seed.”
For Rosalie, the rewards of volunteering are clear. She highlights the work experience she has gained and the impact on her CV, noting the benefits for future career opportunities. But it is not just professional growth that motivates her, it is also the sense of belonging. “You start seeing people you know at so many events.”
Volunteering has also opened doors for Rosalie in paid work. Because of her experience, she understood her worth and how she could contribute, which made stepping into similar contract roles much easier.
Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering is simple: just do it. “Put yourself out there. Bring a friend or family member if you need to. I went to my first event with my mum. But do not be afraid. There are always so many friendly faces. Hamilton’s community is amazing, do not let nerves hold you back.”
Balancing study, work, and volunteering has not always been easy, but Rosalie has learned to prioritise. “I used to volunteer at lots of places, which became overwhelming. Now I focus on what matters most to me.” Currently, she serves on the Seed Waikato Board, the Youth Council for the Regional Council, and the Vanuatu Student Association.
For those hoping to move from volunteering into paid work, Rosalie recommends looking for opportunities similar to volunteer roles, valuing the skills you bring, and then giving it a go.
Through her dedication, Rosalie shows that volunteering is not just about giving, it is about learning, connecting, and creating opportunities for growth.
