Volunteer Literacy Tutor - Community Corrections (Hamilton)

The NZ Howard League is committed to improving literacy and empowering individuals through education. We support learners involved in the criminal justice system—helping them build brighter futures, one learner at a time. We are currently looking for volunteer tutors to work with learners at Community Corrections in Hamilton.

Requirements:
  • Great Communicator: Strong communication and people skills to connect with learners.
  • Patient & Supportive: A positive attitude, empathy, and the ability to encourage progress.
  • Tutoring Experience a Plus: Previous teaching or tutoring is helpful but not required.
  • Flexible & Adaptable: Every learner is different—being open to their needs is key.
  • Reliable Commitment: Able to dedicate time for regular one-on-one sessions.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

Flexible - generally one session per week, working with an individual learner for an agreed time period.
