For too many years the Waitawhiriwhiri Stream eco system heritage and history have been neglected. We need reconnection with our taiao (environment) to take place again with all the people in our communities, not just the youth/rangatahi but pakeke/adults too.
Currently the main work we do is weeding, picking up litter, pulling out what shouldnt be in the taiao, forest, and stream. Such things may include trolleys, tyres, boxes and dumped rubbish etc. In the future we will be planting more rakau and rongoa.
You can come along on a one-off or regular basis. We provide an induction at your first session.
By participating in this volunteering opportunity, you are helping achieve the following:
Our ideal person is someone who enjoys nature, has a passion for restoration and revival, who likes working with others and learning new skills.
Because we are in the outdoors it is advised that people wear their own personal protective equipment, hi-viz, sun block and a hat as well as long sleeves, gloves, long trousers and sturdy, closed footwear, safety boots or gumboots.
You could have a pen and notebook handy for local matauranga and knowledge of our plants.
Strictly no drugs or alcohol.
Our regular hours are mostly every Saturday morning from 9am to 12pm. Some of us go longer depending on our energy levels and our maramataka but we head over to the Waitawhiriwhiri Reserve and catchment located between Nawton and Frankton because the Waitawhiriwhiri stream is also being affected there.
