We are looking for volunteers with a passion for information technology (IT) to assist our 10-week basic computer training program for former refugees. This role is ideal for anyone looking to share their computing skills with someone who has little to no IT skills. Our computer course helps former refugees learn the necessary skills to become computer literate, enabling them to become savvy, self-starting achievers in a tech-centric world. This course will enable them to kick-start their tertiary studies, gain employment opportunities and assist in day-to-day living. As a volunteer, you will learn to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and gain experience in one-on-one tutoring. Additionally, you will also gain satisfaction in seeing our students grow upon gaining new skills and become more independent. We give referrals to volunteers upon completion of the course.

Requirements:

We are looking for someone patient and friendly, with reasonable computing skills. This is a basic computer course and advanced computing skills are helpful but not required. We work with students from various backgrounds and walks of life. An open mind and a flexible approach are needed.

Some skills that are preferred for this role are :

• Proficiency within Microsoft Office Suite
• Proficiency with the Windows system
• Proficiency with Google Apps e.g. Gmail, Google drive
• Attention to detail
• Ability to use social media, such as Facebook
• Ability to tutor people from diverse backgrounds
• Must be able to thrive in an almost constantly changing environment
• Knowledge of a second language is helpful but not necessary

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

This computer course runs for 10-weeks, every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 pm to 6 pm.
