Our organisation supports people with intellectual disabilities and has a volunteer programme which connects volunteers to people seeking friendship or new skills. We have several people who want to learn more about gardening, ranging from growing potted plants, to setting up their own garden beds, to learning about how to develop more garden skills so they can work as a gardener. Therefore we are seeking someone who has a keen interest in gardening and is willing to share their knowledge and experience with others on a 'one to one' basis. Only basic knowledge is required. Having experience in teaching people is helpful but not necessarily needed, as it is more about being patient and being able to adapt to someone else's learning style. Currently we have a middle aged gentleman who has been running his own lawn mowing business who would like to extend it to also including 'garden tidy-ups'. To do this he needs some assistance to learn about general weeding and pruning. This will involve learning on the job, perhaps on your garden.
We are looking for people who have the right personal attributes - patience, kindness, understanding and reliability. You also need to be able to be non judgemental and have good communication skills,in that you are a good listener and are able to adapt your communication style. Otherwise no experience is needed as training and support will be given. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the nature of this volunteer role anyone with a criminal conviction may not be accepted for this position.
