Homebound Delivery Assistant - Chartwell 3

Our staff choose books for our customers, which are then delivered to the customers in their homes by volunteers. We are looking for someone to join our team and accompany one of our existing volunteers on the Homebound delivery service.
This position is based at Chartwell Library, once a month on a Tuesday morning. You will assist Library staff and another volunteer to load, carry and delivery bags of books to our Homebound customers in their own homes, in rest homes, and in other care facilities. You will also help the volunteer driver with directions to customer homes.
Requests for books may be given to you to pass on to Library staff. Some of our customers have disabilities with challenges to hearing and/or speaking. Because of this, you will need to have great communication skills to make sure both you and the customer understand one another so requests are relayed accurately.
For some of our customers, your visit could be a very meaningful social interaction for them, which again makes your communication skills for this role super important.

Requirements:

You will need to be able to lift bags of books which can sometimes be heavy, though we do try to limit the weight of the bags as much as possible. You will need to be able to carry bags (or push a trolley through) hallways, car parks, and up stairs to people's doors, so need to be physically confident in your ability to do these things.
You must have excellent communication skills, as you will be communicating with customers who may have hearing/speaking disabilities, relaying requests, and assisting the driver of your delivery round with navigation.
You must be available once per month on a Tuesday morning on the following delivery dates for 2019: 7th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 30th July, 27th August, 24th September, 22nd October, 19th November and 17th December.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

This advertisement is for assisting the driver of Round 3, a time commitment of between 3 - 4 hours once a month, though this time may vary in the future. You must be available on the dates noted above.

The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
