The Historical Maritime Park has a significant collection of local importance relating to the history of the town of Paeroa and the Hauraki Plains region. As New Zealand’s only inland port, the Museum has significant links dating back to pre-European settlement and the arrival of Captain James Cook in 1769 in HMS Endeavour. The port was the main catalyst in the expansion of the Waihi gold mines prior to the introduction of the railway in 1905. It also played a significant role in the early growth of the Paeroa township. Maritime Museum: The Historical Maritime Park and Museum is maintained and serviced by volunteers from our community. It is a project in progress and we are working hard to reach the full potential of this historic site. Our aims are to preserve and promote the historical, environmental and cultural significance of maritime history of the area.
